Offroad in Our 4X4
With Opportunities to Drive Some Offroad Sections.
Enjoy the very best off-road experience with our flexible tours. The full tour passes through Brasov, Mures, Harghita and Covasna counties over 7 days, but we can package a variety of options, depending on how fast you travel and how much time you wish to spend taking in the sites of Transylvania along the way.
From Predeal, South of Brasov, this amazing tour sets off over upland country to Bran, takes an epic route through the Bucegi Mountains, follows the northern edge of the Fagaras Mountains, makes a detour south onto the Transfagarasan Highway up to the cable car, and then heads north across rolling grassland to Sighisoara.
On the way, you could visit Castle Bran (home of Vlad Tepes/Dracula), and the new visitor centre in the Piatra Craiului National Park, with its wealth of information on the history, geology, wildlife and flora of the area. The cable car (close to your accommodation) provides a trip to the top of the Transfagarasan for an evening meal, where, according to season, the ice hotel may be open to visitors and you could encounter summer snow.
North of the mountains there’s an opportunity to use a traditional pontoon river crossing, and gain privileged access to a fortified Saxon church, while the route passes through rustic Saxon villages that feel like time capsules from 100 years ago. The fortified medieval town of Sighisoara, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is well worth a visit, and one of the buildings, now a restaurant, is said to be the birth place of Vlad Dracul/Dracula’s father. That night’s accommodation offers a party atmosphere with food, drinks and music.
After Sighisoara, the tour continues on tracks and open grassland to Corund, heads towards the Harghita Mountains and Vlahita, continues across to the volcano lake, Sfanta Ana, and takes a route through the mountains before reaching Ghelinta in the valley – a further forest and mountain off-road trip being available, time permitting.
You’ll stop at a traditional charcoal manufacturer to pick up “fresh” charcoal for a BBQ in Corund, which is itself the centre of production of almost all Romanian handcrafted wood and pottery that’s worth browsing. The remaining days offer natural attractions – viewpoints, a cave walk, and Sfanta Ana volcano lake and beach with time for swimming and relaxation – while the off-road driving encounters leafy forest floors, and steep winding descents among other challenges.

WHAT TO BRING
The terrain, climate and diverse activities available here in Transylvania mean you need to travel with a wide range of clothing and equipment. For example, in May you could find yourself swimming in a warm lake and sunbathing on its shores one day; then taking a trip above 2000m altitude the following day, where you will be up to your knees in snow.
You'll be safeguarded
LRI Rescue has a capability similar to the Romainan Mountain Rescue (Salvamont), with volunteer First Aiders, Medics, Nurses and Doctors available to deploy at a moment’s notice with the well equipped Land Rover Rescue/Ambulance vehicles.
